A percentage shows how large one amount is out of 100 and gives a common yardstick for prices, grades, tips, calories, and discounts. Hearing “22%” instantly signals the slice size without knowing the total. Stores use 30% off, restaurants suggest 15%–20% tips, and credit cards quote APRs for the same reason: percents make unlike numbers comparable. Converting any ratio to a “per 100” view removes scale shock, whether it is a $9 lunch or a $900 laptop. It also lets you flip between parts and wholes—if you know the percent and the piece, you can find the total. Mathematical Context
Percent ÷ 100 × Total Convert any percent to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by the total. Example: 20% of 80 becomes 0.20 × 80 = 16. It scales linearly—double the percent or the total and the answer doubles. To reverse it (find the percent a part represents), divide Part by Total and multiply by 100. Quick cues: 10% is sliding the decimal one place; 5% is half of that; 1% is two places. Near $100 totals, “a percent is about a dollar” is a fast estimate, then the calculator gives exact cents. Avoid two common slips: forgetting to convert to decimal and confusing “percent of” with “percent change.”
