Mathematical Context
Percent ÷ 100 × Total Convert any percent to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply by the total. Example: 20% of 80 becomes 0.20 × 80 = 16. It scales linearly—double the percent or the total and the answer doubles. To reverse it (find the percent a part represents), divide Part by Total and multiply by 100. Quick cues: 10% is sliding the decimal one place; 5% is half of that; 1% is two places. Near $100 totals, “a percent is about a dollar” is a fast estimate, then the calculator gives exact cents.
